365 Day 6

I was playing with my shutter speed today, trying to freeze the action by using a faster shutter speed. I chose the kitchen sink because I'm following Flylady.com guide to being more organised around the house, and keeping a shiny sink is the first commandment!

These sleek surfaces definitely look better in black and white, although I do like the blue reflection in one of the tap drips.

365 Day 5

I'm back at work today so I just managed a few point and shoots today. I am so lucky to live in Edinburgh-it's such a beautiful city, and on my work today the sun was rising over Holyrood Palace. Now there is not really anywhere legal to park so I just pulled over and took these quick shots. I'm sure if I had more time to walk and compose the shot it would be better, but it does give a brief view of my great route to work- past Arthur's Seat (the big hill in the background) and past the palace. And all this virtually smack bang in the middle of the city!

!

This is the traffic on my way home-
and the bus parked across the road from our house!

365 Day 4

Just a quick post today.
I'm teaching my son to drive. It's nerve wracking!
But I found a great place to go-a University campus during the Christmas/ New Year break-it's empty!
These photos aren't very exciting but I guess they are a record of something we did today.
I'm also going to see 'Australia' the movie today and may not manage anymore pictures-so this is it for Day 4!

All taken with panosonic FZ5 on auto.
My son has no patience for me faffing about with a camera!

365 Day 3

Well I've managed to keep this up for 3 days!!

I was at home today so just played around with some photos from the garden and some photos of this little condiment set that I bought in a thrift shop. I love the retro look of these. I was playing around with depth of field today. AND I even got off auto, off AP and onto fully manual!!! Yea!!I have chosen one of the canister shots as my photo of the day because I think it's a good example of depth of field:

Here is a collage of some others:

These are some shots from the garden. I like the shot of the seed heads silhouetted against the sky.
I also like the light on the tree branches.

365 day 2

This is my photo for the day. I took photos when Emily and I were out shopping today. I loved all the colours and textures in the shop. I chose this photo because I liked all the lines-the horizontal lines of the shelves, and the folded garments, and the vertical lines of the sticky labels on the clothes. I also liked the colours and the black and white.

Here are some more from the day:

The umbrella shot below was a close contender for the photo of the day.
I like the perspective which shows off the circle of the rack.

I also like the texture in the closeup shot of the scarf.

DAY 1

So, this year I am going to try to take a photo a day, every day, all year! Now those of you who know me will know this will never happen! But it is a worthy challenge! Some days I will get lots of nice photos, and I will upload a selection to this blog. Other days, especially working days, the photo will be more mundane. At the end of the year not only should I have a nice record of 2009, but hopefully my photography skills will have developed also!

So here is today's selection. We visited my mother in law and went for a lovely walk at Balmerino in Fife, on the River Tay. It is a gorgeous spot. It was very cold and we had to negotiate icy puddles, but I managed to get some nice shots. However I am not choosing one of the best for my photo of the day, but instead one that is slightly unusual. This is a picture of me taking a picture of the round traffic mirror that was at the end of a lane:

I have posted a selection of other photos that give a picture of the charm of Balmerino. You can clicck on the images for a closer view.

Reflections

Emily and I reflected in the glass of a building

What a fab reflection of one building and the pedestrian bridge in the windows of the building opposite.

Same building but I rather liked the reflection of the bus as well.

Different buliding but I loved the distortion of the buildings reflected in in. Also love the contrast betweent the modern glass building and the traditional buildings reflected in it.

Again loved the contrast between old and new-the modern pedestrian bridge cutting across the old buildings reflected in the modern building.

And finally, loved this urban style picture of Emily- the cars reflected in the windows and the hint of the old buildings across the street.
